Paul Frank + Collins P.C. returns to the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival this year by sponsoring Lionel Loueke's trio at the FlynnSpace on June 3. Mr. Loueke is a young guitar player from Benin who recently signed to Blue Note Records. Mr. Loueke blends African folk rhythms and jazz with hints of Spanish and Brazilian acoustic music. The New York Times has recently called Mr. Loueke a "gentle virtuoso" and "one of the most striking jazz artists to emerge in some time." PF+C Cofounder Allan Paul Elected Trustee Emeritus to Vermont Law School
In February 2008, Paul Frank + Collins cofounder R. Allan Paul was elected a Trustee Emeritus to Vermont Law School. Mr. Paul served on the VLS Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2004. He was President of the Board from 1995 to 2001. In May of 2006, VLS bestowed Mr. Paul with an Honorary Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. He has also been a guest lecturer at VLS, focusing on his area of legal expertise, trusts and estates. |

Bob Cain’s and Nolan Burkhouse’s First Amendment Efforts Lead to New England Newspaper Association First Amendment Award for the Burlington Free Press The Burlington Free Press was honored on March 14, 2008 at the New England Newspaper Association’s Annual Spring Publishers’ Conference in Boston, for its staunch support of First Amendment rights. The NENA’s Morley L. Piper First Amendment Award was established to highlight the work newspapers do in educating the public and upholding the First Amendment. The annual award recognizes New England newspapers for reporting, editorials, commentary and legal challenges that illuminate or uphold the First Amendment. |

IRS Withdraws Proposed Rules Change for Captives Paul Frank + Collins attorney Christopher Leff was delighted to learn that the IRS is withdrawing the changes it had proposed regarding the taxation of captive insurance companies. In October 2007, Leff wrote an article outlining the intent of the proposed new regulations and their potential to negatively impact the captive insurance industry. The proposed IRS changes would have imposed unfavorable tax treatment on captives that insure risks of sibling corporations within a consolidated group. Had the regulations been finalized, they would have had a dramatic impact on the taxation of a significant number of captive insurance arrangements. |

PF+C Cosponsors The Trials of Darryl Hunt On Wednesday, March 19 at 6:00PM, Champlain College will present a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary, The Trials of Darryl Hunt. The event will take place at the college’s Alumni Auditorium in Burlington and will include a discussion with Darryl Hunt, who spent 20 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit and Mark Rabil, the lawyer who represented him. The event is free and open to the public. |
